I've been very busy working on the latest Itasca Networks for Youth 2011 Spring/Summer Brochure. The brochure lists Youth activities, programs, events, classes and camps for the Itasca County Area for Spring/Summer of 2011. This is the third annual edition of this guide. The final proof has just been approved and it is off to the printers. There will be 6,000 copies distributed through the schools of Itasca County the week of March 21, 2011 so watch for them coming home with your students. There will be additional copies available at area libraries, YMCA, Children Museum, IRA Civic Center, school offices, and School District Community Education offices. the brochure will also be posted on the Itasca Area Community website the week of March 21, 2011.

Lots of exciting things offered for our youth in the coming months! Check our brochure and register early to secure your spots!

Included in the brochure (1st pages) are the FREE Children First! events, programs and classes that are offered now through August, 2011. These are wonderful, engaging events for children, youth, teens and families that are offered FREE to our community. Many area organizations have worked hard to create and hold Children First! events. Some of the events require registration so make sure you register early to secure your place. We also have a Facebook Fan page!/pages/Children-First-Itasca-County-Minnesota/203343373024423 that we will be listing all the future FREE Children First! events so make sure you like us and become a fan so you don't miss out on anything.

Another new thing I have been working on is our Itasca Area Community Education Facebook Page.!/pages/Itasca-Area-Community-Education-Minnesota/163535920346294
Be sure to like us and you'll be able to keep up with all the new and diferent things we're doing in Itasca County.

Last night I had lots of fun attending Tina Karges's Bavlava class. UMMM GOOD!!! We made Bavlava from scratch and really handling that fillo dough isn't that hard. Like everything it jut takes time. We had our Bavlava assembled in under 30 minutes though. Helped that Tina made the syrup and nuts for it ahead of time. I baked it last night and my house smelled wonderful - cinnamon, butter, nuts and sugar!!!

I'm looking forward to attending another in our Desserts Around the World classes in April. Banket-a Dutch pastry, Thursday April 7 6-8pm at Second harvest Food Bank. There's still room in the class - go to to register.
Bon Appetit!
Enjoy your weekend! Karen

Bill Keilty, Ed.D

The Pathway to Intelligent Behavior

The Habits of Mind are a collection of 16 thinking dispositions identified by Dr. Art Costa. Costa defined the Habits of Mind as the dispositions skillfully and mindfully displayed by characteristically intelligent people when confronted with problems the solution to which are not immediately apparent.
We hear a lot about preparing students for the 21st Century. The Habits of Mind are the intellectual characteristics of effective, self-directed learners and creative problem solvers. Join us as Dr. Kielty provides us with a deeper understanding of their application to daily life and how they apply to gifted children.

Bill Keilty, Ed.D., is currently the Coordinator of the Lighthouse Program in the Spring Lake Park Schools, Spring Lake Park, MN. He developed and provides leadership for this innovative school program that has received national attention
Bill has been an advocate for gifted children for the past 32 years. He teaches graduate course work for Hamline University's Gifted Certificate Program. Bill is currently on the MN Department of Education's Gifted and Talented Advisory Council and is legislative liaison for the Minnesota Educators of the Gifted and Talented, a state-wide advocacy group.
